Abstract
Optical fiber is undoubtedly the transmission medium of choice for both telecommunications and data communications. With the worldwide acceptance of the SONET/SDH and ATM standards, fiber optic transmission systems operating at 155 Mb/s, 622 Mb/s and 2.5 Gb/s are being installed for service. The progress of optical transmitter and receiver technology is undoubtedly a key factor in accelerating the commercialization of optical fiber communications. In this paper, the technology of optical transmitter and receiver modules will be reviewed. Recent advances in relevant optical device technology, electronic technology and packaging technology will be discussed. Particular emphasis will be paid on optical transmitter and receiver modules for emerging SONET/ATM applications
