Abstract :
In this paper, a new method for reducing the dimensions of cavity backed slot antennas is proposed. This method involves replacing the metallic ground plane around the slot antenna with a series of parallel strip lines and designing them in a compact fashion. Using this new technique, the overall dimensions of the cavity backed slot antenna can be reduced by over 65%. Ultimately, this method is going to be used in the design of miniaturized on-chip antennas at mm-wave frequencies. As a proof of concept, sample miniaturized cavity back slot antennas at a lower frequency are fabricated and measurement results indicate that they show a very low input VSWR, low cross polarization levels, and front-to-back ratios in the 6-7 dB range despite their small ground plane size
