Abstract :
The concept of a design prototype is proposed for encoding and using generic design knowledge and GPRS, a design shell based on the notion of a prototype, is presented. A method for representing the various kinds of knowledge which constitute a design prototype is proposed. The method exploits the characteristics of both rules and frames and integrates them into a single representation schema. A plan-type as one kind of significant class of prototype in architectural design is demonstrated through the example of the row house plan-type
