Abstract
The ability to guarantee various levels of service quality is an important feature of ATM networks. The mapping of the quality of service (QoS) concept of the fixed ATM network to wireless ATM access networks is currently being researched. The specific characteristics of the radio transmission will require some extensions and modifications of the ATM traffic management functions. We discuss the drawbacks of a wireless physical layer to the ATM service classes, the QoS parameters, the usage parameter control (UPC) and the connection admission control (CAC). A quantitative analysis of the interaction between forward error correction (FEC) and automatic repeat request (ARQ) on one side and the QoS parameters on the other side is provided. In addition we analyze the interaction with the fixed network traffic management and the effects of terminal mobility to the service quality
