Abstract
The ABR service was introduced in order to fully utilize the available bandwidth in ATM networks. We investigate the binary feedback rate control mechanism and the ERICA+ algorithm which is an explicit rate mechanism. Both control mechanisms are tested in a simple one path environment with persistent and with on/off sources. We have used two types of switches, simple FIFO switches and more complex weighted fair queueing switches. The results show the influence of the source type and the switch architecture on the quality of the ABR protocol
