Abstract :
Much recent work on loss performance impact of long-range dependence (LRD) in ATM traffic has failed to consider loss performance defined in transient state. However, in contrast to the steady-state assumption, which implies that a connection might last for an infinite time, connection durations in real-world networks are always finite. Therefore, the loss behavior of a connection an transient state may dominate the actual loss performance of the connection. This paper presents an analysis of transient loss performance impact of LRD in ATM traffic. Our results show that transient loss performance is indeed sensitive to LRD. Therefore, ATM traffic engineering should take LRD into account
