Abstract :
We describe some of our experiences while evaluating the benefits of using ATM technology in the AT&T international infrastructure. This is one part of the ongoing efforts within AT&T to examine the viability and usefulness of ATM. The experiences reported pertain to the superposition of TCP/IP with VBR video and their end-to-end performance, effective bandwidth and statistical multiplexing of VBR voice-band sources, and simulations using the OPNET software package. The goal of the effort is to derive a set of “optimal” controls for an ATM network to maximize its utilization while meeting the QoS requirements of the user applications
