Abstract :
The paper discusses the technical issues affecting the choice of fibre type for sensing schemes using either the fundamental mode alone, or in combination with higher order modes. Issues which need to be addressed include the relative ease of fabricating polarisation couplers and the associated polarisation coupling efficiencies. Also important are the contribution of thermal stress to the birefringence of the fibres and the modal cutoff and birefringence characteristics of each type of fibre
