Considerations on the mobile radio system architecture

Abstract :
A basic architecture for a mobile radio network providing novel services and accommodating increasing subscribers is given. Three kinds of functional modules (mobility management, RF-transmission management, and call control) are introduced to facilitate system expansion, and examples of network architecture are shown. Functions and structures of information, control, and housekeeping channels are proposed to support lower-bit-rate ISDN (integrated services digital network) bearer service as well as usual voice service. Based on digital transmission techniques, such as QPSK (quadrature phase-shift keying) modulation, 8-kb/s speech codec, zone control slot, and multiple carrier amplifier, it has been shown that FDMA (frequency-division multiple-access) digital mobile systems can offer spectrum efficient and high-quality voice and data services
