  • Abstract
    Water absorption in oil impregnated paper insulation has been studied employing techniques used for the investigation of water tree growth in the presence of moisture and asymmetric alternating electrical fields. Damage caused to the paper, inferred from measurements of its tensile strength, varied according to the ionic content of the water used. The reduction in tensile strength suffered in the presence of deionized water was significantly less than when the water contained salts or methylene blue. Water was drawn through the oil impregnated paper, agglomerating around the pin electrode used to create the necessary asymmetric field, there forming classical water tree structures
