  • Abstract
Orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM) is an attractive modulation technique for the next generation of high bit rate wireless transmission due to its efficiency in spectrum utilization and high robustness to multipath fading. However, one of the main problems of the OFDM modulation technique is the large peak-to-average power ratio (PAPR) of the transmitting signals. This high PAPR causes in-band and out-band interference when the OFDM signals are passed through an amplifier which does not have enough linear range. Several techniques such as magnitude clipping, block coding, partial transmit sequence (PTS) and pulse shaping have been proposed to reduce the PAPR. In this paper, the pulse shaping technique, which reduces PAPR without introducing uncontrolled in-band signal distortion and out-band frequency spreading, will be investigated. The complementary cumulative distribution function (CCDF) of the PAPR, which can be used to evaluate the PAPR reduction performance, is derived for OFDM signals with pulse shaping filters
