Abstract :
When voice packets are transported through a network, each packet experiences a different time delay due to buffering at network routers. This delay is compensated by delaying the processing of the first arriving packet at the end station with a smoothing delay. This paper analytically investigates the effect on the total network delay due to the presence of bottleneck servers in a network and a heuristic for approximating the required smoothing delay to ensure the exact reconstruction of the timing of the voice signal at the end station
