Abstract :
The authors study the performance of a multi-local-area-network environment composed of an Ethernet and a token ring network, with mixed voice/data traffic. In particular, the effects on performance of system parameters, such as the number of cross-bridge voice calls and limited versus exhaustive service disciplines in transmission, are studied. In addition, various bridge transmission strategies are studied to explore the maximum number of voice calls that can be supported in both directions. These strategies include the use of priorities based on traffic types as well as various modifications to the backoff algorithm. Some of the schemes are found to be effective in improving the delay/throughput characteristics and the maximum number of voice calls
