Abstract
An application of artificial intelligence to composite materials design is presented. An expert system for materials optimization is illustrated. This system has to process different types of knowledge: mathematical setups and models, finite element analysis (FEM), and heuristic and fuzzy knowledge. For proper operation and useful results the system contains links to databases and external systems like: materials databases, corrosion databases, and databases/systems with knowledge properties, compatibility, corrosion behavior, etc. A first prototype of the system was implemented using the expert system shell KEE. The system is under test and first results show that it can be used as an adequate tool for composite materials design and optimization
