Abstract :
The factors that are affecting corona power loss on the 132kV and 400 kV transmission lines of Jordan have been examined. The paper examines : (1) the dependence of corona loss on the line voltage, conductor size, shape and surface conditions (2) the power loss as a function of temperature, pressure, air density and irregularity factor (3) the power loss under wet and dry weather was also examined. The results show that the value of loss due to corona on 132 kV grid is about 2-4 kwh/km at irregularity factor less than 0.5 while on 400 kV lines it is 16-20 kw/km at low irregularity factor less than 0.3 and under wet weather. The annual losses due to corona for Jordan grid is about 60 GWh on 132 kV lines and 240 GWh on 400 kV lines respectively which represents 1.8% of total generation of country.
