Abstract
In telecommunications, SOAs find application in many roles. We will discuss the most important ones, including amplification in access networks, amplification of an optical supervisory channel in long-haul systems, and application as the core gain element in widely tunable lasers, and we will discuss the inter-relationship of the economics of manufacturing and the markets in which the devices are being applied.
