Abstract :
Sediment samples were collected in Klaipeda port area in 2010 October-December in order to assess their tributyltin contamination and determine distribution patterns within the port area. 23 sampling stations, representing various locations were chosen in accordance to planned dredging activities. Each sediment sample was analysed for the grain size, organic carbon content and total concentrations of tributyltin (μg/kg of dry weight). Total concentrations of tributyltin compounds in sediment samples varied between 3 μg/kg and 850 μg/kg d.w., with lowest values observed in the northern part of the fairway and highest concentrations prevailing in semi-enclosed Malku Bay, characterized by intensive anthropogenic impact. The results of investigations showed preliminary picture of tributyltin compounds distribution in different part of Klaipeda port, highlighting the need for further research data for the precise evaluation of contamination extent and tendencies.
