In this paper, by using Panel data model and data from 2000 to 2009, we make a quantitative analysis for the consumption structure of urban residents in Shanghai, and analyze changes on consumption structure characteristics. Finally, some proposals how to improve the consumption pattern are proposed accordingly. Conclusions can be drawn as: Consumption structure of urban residents in Shanghai has got up to the “rich”. Service consumption expenditure continues to keeping increasing. The gap in consumption expenditure among different income levels shows sign of widening. Marginal propensity of consume transportation and communication, education and recreational services and food are which may become a focus of expanding consumption.
