Abstract :
Tests with a modified IEC 587 `Inclined plane´ procedure show that with DC a form of tracking and severe erosion can occur on toughened glass and on porcelain insulators at stresses used in service (Mason et al., 1987). In these tests polarity effects, which are consistent with service experience, apparently arise from electrolytic corrosion at the positive electrodes. This paper discusses, effects with stainless steel, or platinum electrodes and solutions of NH4Cl, FeCl3 or ZnCl2
