Abstract :
The authors describe field trials and demonstrations of aeronautical voice and facsimile communications by KDD in the Pacific Ocean region commencing in October 1987 using a Japan Air Lines Boeing-747 passenger aircraft. The experimental aeronautical satellite communication system used for the field trials consists of the 9.6 kbit/s APC-MLQ (adaptive predictive coding with maximum likelihood quantization), the rate 1/2 FEC codec using Viterbi decoding and the interleaver. Under actual conditions, the field tests of the aeronautical satellite communication system in accordance with INMARSAT specifications were conducted, and its feasibility was verified
