Abstract
A method is presented to estimate the speed and the pole position of a synchronous machine by measuring only the currents and voltages of its stator and rotor. The estimator is an extended Kalman filter. The algorithm is independent of the inverter type. The model of the synchronous machine in the state space, the Kalman-filter algorithm, a method for calculating the starting values, and a practical realization are shown. Measurements have been carried out and show the practicality of the scheme.<>
