Estimating traffic flows-a new approach to an old problem

Highways are there to carry traffic. Information on the volume of traffic carried is an important aspect of the data held in a highway information system. The traffic flow estimation methods described are being tested using the data collected for the traffic monitoring programmes in Somerset and Dorset. The results have been very encouraging and the work will suggest ways in which the methods may be used to optimise counting strategy
