Abstract :
To sustain the operation of major plant items in a power station during its proposed life-time requires a planned programme of overhaul and maintenance. This is likely to include the replacement or refurbishment of components due to general `wear and tear´, obsolescence, unavailability of spare parts or as a result of modifications elsewhere on the plant. Control and instrumentation (C and I) systems are particularly prominent in these respects usually having a life expectancy less than that expected for major items of mechanical and electrical plant. To offset this however, it is shown that some of the greatest returns on investment can result from the replacement, upgrading or refurbishment of power station C and I systems
