Abstract
The basic configuration and the primary estimation of safety and performance of a novel radio-based train control system are described. Three types of architectures for the radio transmission system are selected, depending on factors such as estimated quality and capacity, traffic density, and existing radio systems. These are LCX, 400-MHz band space wave, and quasimicrowave architectures. It is proposed that the control functions be decomposed so that high capacity and response time may not be required of the radio transmission between the on-board system and the ground system. It is shown that the safety problem caused by radio transmission errors can be removed by adding 32 bits CRC to the control information and by keeping watch on the transmission interval
