The author reviews the impact of Commission of the European Communities (CEC) initiatives on the development of telecommunications networks in the region. Open network provision is discussed, and R and D developments considered. Broadband aspects of ISDN, asynchronous transfer mode, and optical technologies are described, and network management and transition strategies are outlined
