Abstract
Analytic results are presented indicating the performance of optical receivers incorporating superlattice avalanche photodiodes (APDs) allowing for the influence of both residual hole ionization and dark current. The results are compared with those for conventional APDs to indicate the number of stages required for superlattice devices to provide improved sensitivity. An assessment of the implications for future systems performance is provided
