Abstract
A driver information system, based on variable message signs (VMS), is being procured by the UK Highways Agency for the strategic highway network between London and the Midlands, an area known as the Envelope for the purposes of this project. Mott MacDonald, in association with MVA Systematica, has been commissioned to achieve the implementation of the driver information system in the Midlands Module of the Envelope and to lead the development of Regional Control Centres for the Envelope as a whole. The system will provide the Highways Agency with the largest driver information system in the UK and may provide a basis for the potential development of a national network management system. The following paper provides an overview of the driver information system which is to be implemented and details the status of the project at the moment in the context of the projects objectives, the functional analysis of Regional Control Centres and the proposals for implementation of the road-side infrastructure
