  • Abstract
A set of analytical expressions has been derived which provide the means to analyse the AC resistance and losses in the windings of magnetic components. The equations are very versatile in that any periodic current waveform and three conductor types (solid wire, litz wire and strip conductors) can be accommodated. The experimental measurements seem to support the validity of these equations. The predictions are comparable to those of Butterworth´s formulae for single layer coils. Measurements on a multi layer litz wire coil and on transformers with strip conductor, solid wire and litz wire windings also seem to support these equations. An important factor of the eddy current algorithm is the solution of the magnetic field. Already evident from the presented results, is a difference in the accuracy when curvature is ignored or incorporated during the calculation of losses in a long solenoid
