Abstract
It was the experience of the authors that no single commercially available transducer met all the cost/performance requirements of motor commutation. In fact the lack of suitable transducers has been a major obstacle in the development of the brushless servodrive. A novel transducer, known as the INSEN transducer, has been developed by the authors to fill this gap. The transducer is totally brushless and is characterised by its simplicity, ruggedness and potentially low cost. It is capable of producing both absolute position information and a high resolution velocity signal. Not only is it the ideal device for motor commutation but it also has applications far beyond in the general rotary and linear position/motion sensing fields
