Abstract
The behaviour of overhead conductors under varying mechanical load conditions is of great practical importance in the operation of distribution systems. Consequently the field of sag/tension calculations under any combination of conditions is well developed, and has been widely practised by electricity supply industry for many years. However in recent years, some concern has been raised that aluminium based conductors do not always perform as expected. In addition concern about the effects of severe weather on distribution systems has been mounting. The author discusses the behaviour of conductors subject to severe weather conditions, and describes some experimental work currently being undertaken to investigate this area
