Refurbishing an up-rating a municipal 88 kV network

Johannesburg, the largest city and main business centre of the Republic of South Africa, has a total population exceeding one million and a maximum one hour peak demand for electricity of 1248 MW (winter 1986). Its electricity network, supplying power to an area of 544 km² is managed by the City Council of Johannesburg and is independent of the national network. The authors present a description of a refurbishment project which will uprate the municipal power network to 88 kV. The uprating plan, constructional techniques and contractual aspects are all discussed
