Abstract :
A discussion is presented of how to develop adaptively a rule-based system which can provide firms with guidelines in deciding positioning strategies for their products in the fast-changing high-technology market. The rule-development and revision processes and positioning strategies are considered. The authors stress that one important issue of the rule-development process is credibility of rules developed. The methodology is applied to workstation products and is proven to be useful for decision-making in positioning strategy. Rules developed with a rule-revision process using workstation industry data up to 1987 and applied to 1988 give 91.7% prediction accuracy
