A concept for an HVDC traction system

It is a well-known fact that single phase AC is not the most ideal railway electrification system. A DC system has obviously many advantages to the single-phase AC system. However, so far the limited system voltage has been a considerable drawback. The authors present a quite realistic system, which permits high system voltages. To some extent the ideas are not new, but the application is interesting and makes HVDC electrifications a possibility today.
