Abstract :
The authors present a study of an alternative form of rotor construction which uses a solid-steel body and blocks of magnet material located beneath steel pole caps. This enables rectangular pieces of magnet to be used and only the pole caps need be skewed to avoid cogging torques. Asynchronous starting torque is contributed by eddy currents induced in the solid-steel rotor, primarily in the pole caps
