Abstract
Capacitor compensated variable speed induction drives (CCVSIDs) from 500 kW to 5 MW output capacity have been manufactured in substantial numbers during the past decade and have given reliable performance in a wide variety of commercial installations. They have been installed in chemical plant, oil exploration rigs, oil production platforms, oil refineries, paper mills, power stations, ships and in steel mills. Other applications to open up new business opportunities in traditional industries, are being developed. The authors outline briefly the principles underlying CCVSIDs and describes the approaches that are adopted to ensure that speed control of induction motors can be achieved with high reliability and integrity
