Abstract :
Reviews the basics of optical fibre multiplexing and fibre termination techniques and suggested a number of alternative architectures which could be deployed in rural networks. Two basic multiplexing techniques are time-division multiplexing (TDM) and wavelength division multiplexing (WDM). It is possible to connect many fibres together optically. These joint are highly directional in nature. In order to describe how these types of joint can handle TDM and WDM signals the description is separated into splitters and combiners
