Abstract :
In recent years, many advances have been made in the area of digital signal processing, a fact which brings the coding of high definition television images a step closer to reality. Generally speaking, the coding algorithms are based on the principle of digital assistance and use is made of motion compensation and subsampling techniques. Specification of the transmission parameters and coding algorithm, although very important, is not the complete story. In order to make HDTV a consumer reality, effort is still required in two major areas, that of silicon technology and display technology. This paper concentrates on the display technology aspects-and not on the decoder aspects-as without a suitable display, the full potential of HDTV cannot be realised. Some recent developments in this area are presented
