            Abstract :
H.264/AVC is the newest video coding standard developed by the joint efforts of ISO MPEG and ITU-T VCEG. Several coding elements contribute to the improvement in compression efficiency for the new standard. One of them is the infra-frame prediction. The basic idea behind the H.264/AVC intra prediction modes is the one directional (forward) prediction. The proposed two-directional prediction algorithm can improve this one-directional prediction scheme. The average SAE/block of the proposed algorithm is 29-75% less than that of H.264, and the residual energy after transform and quantization of the proposed algorithm is 63%-314% less than that of H.264.
