Abstract :
Delivering video over wireless networks is a challenge especially when high definition is required. This paper presents a modified slicing scheme that can provide in-frame packet prioritization. The proposed scheme is based on the unequal importance of different regions within a frame in the presence of cyclic intra refresh lines (used to reduce temporal error propagation). Packet priority is then applied based on the relative position of a slice with respect to the intra refresh line. The proposed scheme does not require any decoder modification. Additionally, the scheme does not add any bitrate or computational overheads. Simulation results for a quality of service enabled wireless network prove that the scheme can achieve quality gains up to 3 dB over sending video without applying priorities.
