Abstract :
A high performance 2.4Gbit/s transimpedance optical receiver has been developed which is suitable for long distance telecommunication systems. It uses a custom designed GaAs IC to reduce cost and improve performance compared with present hybrid based receivers. An unselected sample of five optical receivers has been characterised with a mean receiver sensitivity of -29.6dBm. This is within 1.3dB of the sensitivity of a high impedance receiver and represents the highest sensitivity for a commercial transimpedance PIN GaAs IC receiver at this bit rate
