Abstract :
Presents a novel technique to measure the birefringence profiles of stress-induced polarization-maintaining fibres and a new finite-element method to evaluate mode field characteristics from measured data. The application of these techniques to the bow-tie fibre York HB 600/2 and independently measured modal birefringence show sufficiently good agreement
