Abstract :
This paper presents a scheme for the protection of video streaming over a broadband wireless link. The scheme combines adaptive channel coding with additional duplicate packets. Adaptive channel coding is achieved by varying the amount of redundancy according to channel conditions and by retransmission of extra redundant data to reconstruct corrupted packets. In addition, outright packet loss before channel coding can be applied is addressed by means of a duplicate stream of packets. The scheme is applied to data-partitioned video streaming over wireless access networks. Reasonable quality video results, even in very harsh channel conditions. However, the paper finds that it is preferable: not to simply protect just the highest priority packets; and that a moderate quantization level should be employed. It is also important to configure the partitioning correctly so as to remove all inter data partition dependencies.
