Abstract
The application of qualitative reasoning methods in process control is discussed. The work presented is confined to SISO systems with different experimental processes used as application examples. The work shows that pure qualitative knowledge is insufficient to build an efficient controller. Significant improvements can be obtained by combining the qualitative model with process-related quantitative knowledge. The potential advantages of combining qualitative control with state estimation and conventional quantitative control schemes are demonstrated
