Abstract :
The paper proposes an approach to residual generation by stochastic qualitative techniques. The fundamental issue of the stability-like property of the Markov chain model and its relationship to the stability of the original system are discussed. The problem of spurious solutions, crucial to applying the Markov chain model for fault detection, is dealt with using the qualitative-observer approach
