Abstract :
Propagation data at L-band (1542 MHz) with a sample size of half a million were analyzed in terms of probability distribution of the envelope and phase of the received signal, which experienced four different fading conditions: (1) light shadowing; (2) light to heavy shadowing; (3) medium shadowing; and (4) medium to heavy shadowing. The results showed that the attenuation due to fading and shadowing is in the range of 14.0 to 21.7 dB 99% of the time and the RMS phase jitter can be as much as 19.3°. These results should be useful for the design of mobile satellite communications systems
