Abstract
Student assessment plays a fundamental part in every e-learning process, where it can serve to check whether the learner has achieved the intended learning outcomes (summative assessment), but also as a means to aid in the learning itself (formative assessment). Nevertheless, there exist no formal standards to cover this type of content, just some specifications, such as IMS QTI. In this article, we present a study of formats for assessment and their usage in Europe. We also present a reference metamodel for assessment that covers the needs of all stakeholders in relation to this topic.
