Abstract
The generation of acoustic waves during the growth of an inelastic laser breakdown zone in a transparent insulator was investigated. It is shown that the law of temporal evolution of the sizes of the zone of inelastic deformation can be determined unambiguously from the time dependence of the pressure in an elastic wave recorded at a large distance from a breakdown nucleus
