Abstract :
The various sources of noise identified are discussed followed by a comparison of carrier-to-noise ratio (CNR) and SNR methods of characterising optical data channels. The various detection schemes and their relative merits are also discussed. Three main types of noise discussed are electronic noise, laser noise and media noise
