  • Abstract
The author presents a feasibility study of a thin film read/write head with a magneto-resistive (M-R) film. A computer model of such a read/write head has been devised. Calculations of the recording and bias fields in the pole-to-recording medium space have been carried out; a mathematical model of a ring type head based on Karlqvist´s x-component was used as the perpendicular field distribution function for the single pole head. An improved mathematical analysis of the single pole head is presented by dividing the potential distribution into two regions, one underneath and one around the pole. Computer software, written in Fortran, produces the relevant response curves and magnetic field plots for direct comparison with the results obtained on a large scale experimental model. The agreement is not perfect but it shows that the approximations made in the theory are entirely justified for most practical purposes
