Abstract
The SCOOT traffic responsive urban traffic control system has been installed in over 30 towns and cities in the UK and overseas. The primary purpose of SCOOT is the optimisation of signal timings in a network according to current traffic conditions to reduce overall traffic delay. However, in the process of optimisation SCOOT´s traffic model provides a wealth of traffic information which is potentially useful for a variety of purposes. The paper describes a study carried out by the Transportation Research Group (TRG) of Southampton University for the Transport and Road Research Laboratory (TRRL) into the development and production of a SCOOT traffic database, aimed at realising the potential of the data within SCOOT systems
